A gravel driveway that's going to hold up to years of vehicle traffic, Missouri weather, and heavy loads needs to be built on a properly prepared base. Here's what that preparation looks like.
Step 1: Establish the Route and Grade
Mark out the driveway footprint. Establish the final grade — this determines how high or low the finished surface will sit and ensures proper drainage.
Step 2: Clear and Excavate
Clear all vegetation, topsoil, and organic material from the driveway footprint. Topsoil is not a stable base — it compresses and shifts. You need to get down to stable mineral soil.
Step 3: Build the Base
On soft or wet ground, a layer of geotextile fabric prevents gravel from sinking into soil. Then build up with compactable base material — typically a larger crushed stone — before the finish gravel goes on top.
Step 4: Install and Grade the Gravel
Finish gravel is spread and graded with proper crown. Hops Hauling handles this entire process — start to finish — for residential, farm, and commercial driveways throughout Joplin. Call (417) 439-7711.
